Alpine Construction Erects First Residential Wind Generator in Siskiyou County
                 Off-Grid Subdivision

  • McCloud CA, September 25, 2006 — Alpine Construction – an environmentally conscious
construction company and renewable energy system installer – recently erected the first
residential wind generator in the Mount Shasta Forest subdivision. The two-kilowatt wind
turbine is the latest addition to a state-of-the-art renewable energy system designed and
    integrated by O’Connell Solar.

  • The subdivision includes approximately 700 parcels without grid-connected power. This
private community located at the base of Mount Shasta is devoted entirely to using renewable
energy systems to power all homes currently under construction in the area.

  • “Residential wind generators are an emerging technology that until now was been largely
ignored,” said Alpine Construction CEO Ken Roseberry. “They are a smart way to augment
other forms of renewable energy systems available to residential home owners,” he added.
The new wind generator Roseberry recently installed is a Southwest Windpower model H80
    secured atop a 65-foot tower.

  • Alpine Construction is one of the fastest growing green builders in Siskiyou County.   They
herald this installation as one of many they have plans for in the coming year. The company is
known throughout the Siskiyou County area for building homes that are not only beautiful but
use renewable and natural content products in their construction. “The opportunity to erect
one of the first wind systems in the area was a project that we felt was long overdue,” said
Roseberry. He anticipates that small residential wind systems like the H80 will be the next
hottest trend in renewable energy products. When asked why, he adds, “they work well in
conjunction with existing photovoltaic systems. Their low noise output and minimal visual
impact make it a logical choice for those seeking to build their homes off the grid.”

  • Alpine Construction regularly partners with O’Connell Solar – a renewable energy system
design and integration company – to provide turnkey engineering solutions for residential
    developments of any size.

  • O’Connell Solar President Richard O’Connell describes the systems they work on together as
ranging from 1,200 sq. ft. cabins to spacious 4,500 square foot homes with all the amenities
of a standard utility powered home. “Although the cost of providing your own power system
is not cheap,” said O’Connell, “the systems are competitive with the current cost of electrical
power in the area.” He also suggests that incorporating the system costs into the mortgage
financing of new construction is an advantage that most homeowners are not able to take
    advantage of.

"Off the grid: Secluded subdivision turns to sun, wind for primary power

By Dylan Darling, Record Searchlight
October 29, 2006

McCLOUD -- The buzz of Greg Carr's rotary saw drowns
out the rumble of his propane-fed generator as he spends
a Wednesday afternoon working on home improvement projects.

But without the generator there would be no buzz.

Carr, his wife and their twin 4-year-old boys live most of the year
off the power grid in the Mt. Shasta Forest subdivision about 12
miles northeast of McCloud. About 150 homes are tucked into
the forested subdivision and more and more are being built.
There are about 800 lots.

For many of those building and living in the subdivision, the answer
to the question of where to get power is to go green. Solar panels are
common at new homes there, and there's now a small windmill.
Carr said he plans to install a $12,000 solar power system come springtime.

Why?

"So we don't have to listen to the generator all the time," he said.

The generator powers the Carrs' on-demand water heater, washing machine and any lights -- aside
from gas lamps or flashlights -- they want to have on at night.

Once the solar panels are in, energy pulled from the sun's rays will be stored in batteries and used
when needed.

Propane will still be used to heat the clothes dryer, fuel the stove and run the refrigerator.

While the Carrs plan to add solar panels to their already-built home, many of their new neighbors
are having the equipment put into their houses as they are built.

"In this country, if you can afford it, it is really the way to go," said Ken Roseberry, co-owner of
Alpine Construction and Consulting of Mount Shasta.

The company is not only building many of the new homes going into the subdivision, but also
installing solar power systems, he said."
